RASPS
Trimming and filing is a smooth process with Heller Rasps. Every farrier knows a good rasp is one that stays sharp and doesn’t end up with clogged teeth while filing, and every good rasp manufacturer knows achieving this means tailoring the tool to the climate. That’s why Heller Rasps have designed a comprehensive collection of tools that includes options for any situation.
The History Of Heller Rasps
Heller Rasps have a long and proud history. Part of Heller International - a member of the Mustad group - the Heller Rasps brand was born in 1836 when Elias Heller , a German immigrant, started producing rasps and files in Newark, US.
Things really started to take off in 1866 when Elias’ sons, Elias George Heller and Paul Elias Heller joined the company, and by 1953, Heller had become one of the top three brands in the world. Simonds acquired the brand in 1955, and in 2006, Heller joined the Mustad Group.
Throughout their history, Heller have striven for continuous improvement, and with quality at the forefront, the brand has now expanded their range to include the various options available at Mustad Australia today.
The Different Tooth Options On Farrier Rasps
6 Teeth
Hoof Rasps with this image indicate a six tooth design, which is the traditional width.
9 Teeth
The eXcel range of Heller rasps features a nine tooth design. Hoof rasps with the 9 tooth design are wider than the 6 tooth rasp. This configuration sees the teeth extend almost to the edge of the rasp and enables rasping clips.
What Types Of File Does The Heller Rasp Range Offer?
The file side of a farrier rasp can be used to file the side of the hoof flat and to polish the hoof wall. Heller rasps are available with two file side options:
Multiglide File
Exclusive to the eXcel Legend and Pro Finish farrier rasps, the multiglide file style leaves a smooth finish and assists in achieving a polished and impressive look.
Original File
The Original style file side has a slightly more aggressive design. Found on most Heller rasps, it offers shaping and polishing capabilities.
A Farrier Rasp For Every Climate
Because the climate that a horse lives in can influence the hardness of their hooves, it can also influence the type of hoof rasp needed to get the job done right. Luckily, the team at Heller Rasps are expert crafters and have designed rasps suitable for any climate.
Heller Rasps For Dry Climates
If you see this icon associated with a Heller brand rasp, it means it has been designed with dry climates in mind. This makes it ideal for use on horses living in dry conditions where hooves will often be harder and have a lower moisture content.
For example, the Heller Red Tang Rasp is a popular rasp to use in these conditions.
Farrier Rasps For Wet Climates
By the same token, farrier rasps in the Heller range that are designed for use in wet climates will feature this icon. These rasps have an open tooth structure specifically engineered to help prevent clogging.
For example, the Heller Legend Rasp features a large tooth angle on the rasp side, making it ideal for wet and muddy conditions. This is because the angled, open design of the teeth helps prevent mud and hoof debris building up.
Heller Rasps With Black Coating
Black coated hoof rasps are designed for humid climates and offer enhanced rust resistance. They are crafted to ensure easy release of horn material from the teeth and provide improved durability and a longer life cycle in humid weather.
An example of this is the Heller Black Master Rasp.
Hoof Rasps For Everyday Use
Finally, if you are looking for a rasp to use every day, try the Heller eXcel Legend Rasp or Heller eXcel Original Rasp. Both options feature a wide profile with 9 teeth on the rasp side, and offer ease of use while achieving a smooth finish. The Heller Pro Finish Rasp is also suitable for use in most climates and is designed to create a premium finish on every hoof.
Complete Your Toolkit With A Rasp Handle
In addition to the wide range of hoof rasps available, Heller Rasps also manufacture handles. With specific options for the eXcel range, as well as handles that are compatible with the whole collection, these ergonomic additions make it easier to control your rasp.
A good hoof rasp is one that is sharp and predictably removes hoof material without the teeth becoming clogged, regardless of the climate or direction of work. Heller Rasps achieve this with innovative technologies and a highly reliable production process. Each rasp is individually inspected and tested before it leaves the factory, and is packed as a single unit to reduce the risk of damage.
