What Are The Benefits Of Aluminium Horseshoes?

Lightweight Construction

As the lightest available type of horseshoe, aluminium shoes are the ideal choice for racing horses, horses competing in events that include jumping, and animals that may experience strain from or have difficulty wearing heavier shoes.

Enhanced Shock Absorption

Horses that require additional shock absorption will often benefit from the fitment of aluminium horseshoes as they provide more support in this area than steel horseshoes. Aluminium shoes are also particularly well suited for horses that are being rehabilitated following a hoof or leg injury and many options can be paired with hoof pads for enhanced recovery.

Race Compliant Options

Many racing events have strict regulations regarding the type of shoe that a competing horse can be shod with. In most cases, aluminium horseshoes will be the only compliant option due to horse safety and fairness requirements.

More Comfortable For The Horse

Because aluminium shoes weigh less, they put less stress on the leg and hoof. Although the pressure from any horseshoe is generally considered minimal, small improvements can make a world of difference for horses dealing with hoof conditions. Aluminium horseshoes are also considered to be more comfortable in general, making them a great option for any horse as long as their discipline and environment are suitable.

 

What Are The Downsides To Using Aluminium Shoes For Horses?

Less Traction On Some Surfaces

Aluminium horseshoes are not particularly well suited to horses that spend a lot of time in grassy or muddy areas. This is because they do not offer as much traction as steel horseshoes, so you will probably be better off selecting an option from that category for the Winter months or generally wet climates.

Not As Long Wearing As Steel Shoes

An aluminium shoe will easily withstand a standard shoeing cycle, but if you have restricted access to farrier assistance, or require an extended shoeing cycle for some reason, steel shoes may be a better option. Horses that work particularly hard (such as those participating in the mustering season) will also generally benefit from the fitment of a steel horseshoe,
