Exciting Farrier Updates from Associations across Australia and New Zealand

PFBAQ

The PFBAQ was pleased to run our first shoeing competition in over a year at the Heavy Horse Field days on the first weekend of May. It was a successful event with seven Qld teams competing under the watchful eye of the judge Mr Mick Fitzgerald from NSW. All teams went away with a prize due to the generosity of our sponsors and a big thanks goes to Mustad Australia for their contribution. Our next competition is Caboolture in early June followed by the Ekka in August and finally Mudgeeraba in September. The membership of the PFBAQ continues to remain strong and we retain a healthy financial position.

The updated Cert 4 in farriery is on the cusp of being implemented, with the Qld government requirement for all current and future employers of apprentices to obtain the cert 4 in order for the RTO to obtain funding assistance.

The new gas regulations for farriers using gas forges in their vehicles and trailers is slowly working its way through the relevant government departments and we hope to have some clarification by years end.

PFANSW

G’day all from PFANSW,

We hope everyone is going well in the COVID outbreak as we get back to as normal as we can.

With not much happening in 2020 we were hoping 2021 to be bigger and better but it didn’t start too well with a competition at Tenterfield being cancelled again due COVID-19.

We were able to get a little clinic in at Newcastle on Equilox, tool maintenance and competition shoeing.  Chris Rowland, Trent Bell and Brad Hinze did a great job with a small but very interested mob of farriers.

This clinic was held a month before the Scone EPLC Horse Festival farrier competition.   We were lucky enough to have Liam and Clint arrive from Melbourne in which we put them to work for a couple of days before they headed back south.

Scone was a great success with 16 competitors in Novice and Open with Bob Sim winning the Open High Point and Michael Roe winning the Novice High Point.  Prizes were spread over most of the competitors which was great to see.

A big thank you to James Balfe, JD and our judge Mr Dave Winter.  It wouldn’t have been a success without you there.

So to the future, our next big event is 30/31July and 1st of August being held at Tamworth NCHA Futurity.  The program is out now and it’s a big program.  We have also decided to put 80% of entries back into prize money.  The more competitors the more prize money will be paid back to competitors. We also have some big prizes with an anvil, and a Mustad Forge up for grabs for high point as well as a lot of other special gear accumulating.  Check out the program and get practising!!

Look forward to seeing everyone there.

Western Australia Farrier Association

It's rather quiet here in WA on the face of things with the Association, although plans and preparations are in place for a new comp at a new venue in the Perth Hills "The Chidlow Tavern"  The latest Covid lockdown halted plans to hold a Competition on the 1st of May in Conjunction with a Meat Smoking Comp, hosted by an internationally recognised Meat Smoking and BBQ circuit.

A program and Judge have been selected and a new Tie up rail has been erected by members of the Farriers Association, for this year's Comp and future Events.

A meeting is to be held this month to decide on a date to proceed with the event in the near future.

The Chidlow Tavern will be a great venue for an annual Comp aswell as the Gidgegannup Show grounds due to the two locations logistic bliss of been just under 30 minutes from Perth airport, with main highways leading straight to the Venues. This will great for the future when interstate travel is guaranteed.

During this quiet time many members are making personal progression with their properties, Forges and family's.

It's great to see previous apprentices/students progressing into business people and building their rounds and reputations. Aswell as some new faces coming into the trade.

Hopefully we will see them them all become involved with the association.

South Australia Farrier Association

South Australian Farriers and Blacksmith Association has pretty much just started up again. It’s been a busy year for all. The Adelaide Show farrier competition is well on track for September 4-6th and looking forward to seeing who ever can come. I will post the program on our Facebook site.

Thanks Chris Francis

New Zealand Farrier Association

Hello from New Zealand,

What a year it has been, lock downs, controversy with being classified as essential workers and the Animal Welfare Act recognising us eventually. Although some chose to stay at home at Level 4 which I believe was the right decision.

Life returned to normal a little after that in New Zealand and it seemed we were a lot safer than the rest of the world.

Through the early days of COVID it was great to see farriers from both sides of the Tasman in the forge having online competitions and moving forward using webinars to spread knowledge.

Congratulations to Mustad to their new app, it is something that I am passionate about. I have been using similar one for 3-4 years now with Xero for accounting. Best thing to happen in my business for the last 25 years. To all that are starting out please embrace technology, use it to work smarter and get a better work life balance.

We have a competition in June down in Christchurch and our national finals will be in Stratford again this year in the last weekend in November. That is all we have planned at this stage. Rotorua has been put on hold until it is safer to travel around the world.

This week our training block courses start with a reasonable number of young men coming along. Last week we celebrated the apprentices that qualified last year. What a great bunch of men. I know you will be a great asset to the industry now and in the future.

Good luck to everyone around Australasia and I hope to catch up when things are a bit safer to travel and no risks of lockdown.

Regards, Jock Good
